This summer don’t miss the haunting sound of the massed pipes and drums of the 63rd Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo which will take place from the 3 – 25 August against the magnificent backdrop of Edinburgh Castle. Combining brilliant music and military theatre with a matchless setting, it is a real must see which should be on everyone’s bucket list.

  • This year’s Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo will feature a range of superb international performers with the centrepiece of the evening being the spine-tingling sights and sounds of the world-famous massed pipes and drums, the finest display anyone can witness anywhere in the world.
  • It will also celebrate the Year of Creative Scotland and Her Majesty The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
  • The full list of performers is yet to be revealed but 2012’s highlights include a performance from one of the world’s most sensational percussion groups – Switzerland’s Top Secret Drum Corps – remarkable drills from the Norwegian Armed Forces and talented pipe bands from Australia and New Zealand.
  • Every night the Military Tattoo ends on a poignant note as the haunting Lone Piper is performed from high up on the castle ramparts.
  • With over a thousand performers already lined up, the 2012 Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo is likely to be another sell-out show.

You should always try to plan your route in detail before you set off, maybe make a list of questions you need to ask yourself such as:

  1. have I got my breakdown cover details ready?
  2. have I got credit cards to buy fuel?
  3. do I want to take a longer scenic route or the fastest motorways?
  4. what attractions do I want to visit?
  5. what breaks am I going to take at each point of the journey? (especially if you have young kids)
  6. does the driver need to take driving rests periods?

Can I stop somewhere on the way and where can I park my motorhome

It is well worth investing in a good map of the UK and a SAT NAV system before you set off on your motorhome holiday. I usually plan ahead and decide where we are going to stay for at least the first night which becomes even more important if you have a long journey ahead, believe me the last thing you want is to be driving around an unfamiliar town late at night looking for a place to park up your motorhome.

If you do find yourself in a difficult situation with nowhere to stay then you may have to consider parking in the heavy goods area of a Motorway Service Station areas which although noisy can offer some advantages such as convenience and food, toliet and fuel facilities, be aware that fire regulations do not permit use of gas appliances on a service station.

“Wild camping” is also an option, we have done this on several occasions and have stayed at some great places, but technically this is not really allowed as in theory you need the permission of the landowner to do this. So if you are feeling a bit cheeky then in most cases as long as you are sensible and do not block anyone’s driveway or make a nuisance then this perfectly acceptable in the holiday motorhome world.

Motorhomes – choosing a good pitch

Choosing a good pitch can be a very important factor, but the first thing you should do is find a campsite that has all the facilities you need, this is very easy these days with the internet giving you a wealth of information, and websites such as Trip Advisor and Holiday Watchdog give you real peoples experience of these sites so that you can make comparisons quickly and easily.

The actual pitch you choose should be hard-standing as if it is soft you can find that a motorhome can sink into the ground and you can also find it difficult to drive on/off the pitch.

Also think about your positioning, where can you hook up to the power supply and would you want to be close to the disco or communal toilets for example, also be careful when you drive on and off a pitch as this is a time where you can damaged your motorhome by hitting an object.

This might sound OTT bit also think carefully about parking to close to large trees, as in high winds the branches can break and cause damage to a motorhome that is parked below, parking close to other motorhomes who might clip you in the rush on the first or last days of their holiday is also another factor to consider.

Water For Your Motorhome

As you will know, it is pretty hard to live without water!

Motorhomes need drinking water and water to flush waste and for washing etc, most of the time people will choose to use the communal campsite toilets rather than their own toilet when available for obvious reasons.

Most motorhomes will come with a pre filled on-board fresh water tank and there will be gauges within the motorhome that will idicate when levels are getting low, you then have the option of filling up on site or at a garage with the water hose that should have been provided.

You will also have a seperate grey water waste tank with about the same capacity.

The toilet must be emptied at a chemical disposal point or toilet and a special fluid must be added such as supplied by the company Maypole who have introduced a range of toilet fluids that are truly eco friendly toilet fluid and rinse combinations.

Fridges and Food For Your Motorhome

Motorhome fridges can operate on a 12 or 240 volt power supply.

The 12 volt feed is supplied by the alternator when the engine is running and not by the leisure or engine battery as some people think.

When you are hooked up to the mains at a campsite you can easily switch to the higher 240 volt supply. If you are on a campsite with no mains supply or somewhere en-route you can switch to operate the fridge by gas instead as a temporary measure.

If you are heading abroad and have a long ferry trip ahead my advise would be to buy your food on arrival where possible as you will not be able to power the fridge during a crossing. however the high level of insulation of the fridge will keep the contents cool for a few hours so short crossings are not too bad in this respect.

Tip: You are not allowed to use any Bottled Gas supplies during any ferry crossings due to the danger of an explosion and this is illegal, it always amazes me how many people do not follow these safety rules!

Enjoy Your Holiday and have a safe Journey!

Visitors who choose to stay at five star Oxon Hall Touring Park in Shrewsbury can now do a spot of fishing during their stay.

The caravan holiday home and touring park, which is owned by Morris Leisure, sits in glorious parkland on the edge of Shropshire’s county town. Shropshire Anglers Federation (SAF) has taken over the fishing rights for Oxon Pool, which adjoins Oxon Pool Holiday Home Park and Oxon Hall Touring Park. The pool is stocked with perch, bream, carp, roach and rudd, with pike to specimen proportions.

The pool is a designated nature site which both walkers and anglers are welcome to visit. People staying on the caravan park who wish to go fishing can purchase a day ticket, which includes SAF day membership, from the park reception for £7.

“Holiday home owners as well as visiting touring caravan and motorhome owners will be delighted to have the opportunity to fish in the improved Oxon Pool,” said Edward Goddard, managing director of Morris Leisure. ‘It’s another good reason to own a holiday home here or to visit the touring park.”

The countryside park is conveniently located close to Shrewsbury town centre, with a Park and Ride bus service available to transport visitors to the town centre, which has a range of shops, pubs and restaurants.

“Apart from being on the edge of the town, the park is also well placed for those wishing to explore the rural delights of Shropshire and the Welsh Marches,” Edward added. “Our existing holiday home owners tell us they enjoy the tranquil views across the lake with its abundant wildlife, bird watching from our own bird hide and relaxing walks in the grounds.”

Q: What is the maximum number of people allowed to travel in a hired motorhome?

A: The maximum of 6 people are allowed to travel in a hired motorhome but that will be increased to 7 if the motorhome you hire has 7 seat-belts Only if a motorhome has 7 seat-belts. You will have to hire another motorhome if there are more people travelling in the motorhome.

Q: Can a motorhome be hired for only a day or less?

A: No. there is a minimum hire period of three days, motorhome hire companies may increase this in summer month’s when the holiday season is in full swing by up to seven days for motor home hire.

Q: How often will I have to fill my motorhome up with fuel?

A: Most hired motorhomes run on diesel which makes them more economical, however most modern motorhomes still only give around 20 to 30 miles per gallon and this is also dependant on a lot of variables like the weight of your stuff inside for example.  This is another cost that you need to build into your motorhome holiday costs to get a true idea of the total cost of your motorhome holiday.

Q: How do I get a water supply to my rental motorhome?

A: Your motorhome will come with a water pump that is powered from the leisure battery – This is a separate, independent battery that will pump water from your motorhomes internal storage tank.  The motorhomes water-tank can be filled up using the fresh water supply that will be located somewhere on the campsite.

Q: Does the motorhomes heating and other appliances work without an electrical hookup?

A: Yes. You do not need to worry as all hired motorhomes will have easy to use on-board gas bottles that will heat the motorhome and other appliances.  The motorhomes Internal lights and water pump will use a 12 Volt supply from the independent leisure battery.

Q: Do hired motorhomes get very cold in the winter or on cold nights

A: N0. most modern motorhomes have excellent insulation and heating systems, however we do not advise you to take a UK motorhome to a Ski resort as UK hire motorhomes are not as well adapted to cold weather as motorhomes that can been hired from Scandinavian countries where motor home hire companies for are well prepared for extremely cold conditions.

Q: Is a motorhome toilet the same as my toilet at home

A: No. The name given to a motorhome toilet is a “cassette toilet” which is very similar to your toilet at home, except that when you flush the motorhomes toilet the waste is moved to this “removable cassette” which can be reached easily from outside the rental motorhome.  This has been done to make removing the waste easy – you then need to empty this cassette or removable tank if you prefer into a designated place within the campsite.   A strong chemical solution must be added before you empty the contents of the cassette to stop any contamination.  Full instruction on this matter will usually be provided by the motorhome hire company when you collect the vehicle.
